The Week in Review: CPS Board Vote Keeps Cops in Schools

The Chicago Board of Education votes 4-3 along gender lines to keep Chicago police in Chicago Public Schools for now. Meanwhile, Mayor Lori Lightfoot announces a $50 million effort to bring broadband to 100,000 underserved CPS students as the governor announces that schools will start in-person learning in the fall but with a virtual backup plan.

The Chicago Fraternal Order of Police union is negotiating its contract in public, pushing Lightfoot on residency requirements as protesters and activists push to “defund” police. Meanwhile, the mayor’s new top cop, David Brown, tries to quell rumors that he’s leaving his post as Chicago’s summer gun violence explodes.
