The Week in Review: COVID-19 Cases Soar as McCormick Place Facility Opens


Illinois saw its largest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases Friday with an additional 1,209 patients testing positive for the virus and 53 additional deaths. There are now 8,904 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Illinois, and 210 deaths. With the growing number of cases in Chicago, McCormick Place has been transformed into a 500-patient field hospital in just five days.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot taps former Dallas chief of police David Brown as Chicago’s new top cop. And 6.6 million people filed for unemployment nationally this week. In Illinois, 187,000 filed for unemployment amid struggles to get through to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
