Weekends already feel too short, and now we have to lose a precious hour Sunday morning.

That’s when the shift to daylight saving time goes into effect, as clocks all jump forward an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

It’s a switch that more or less went unquestioned for decades but now is being challenged, as in “What’s the point?”

Truly, there is no point. daylight saving has nothing to do with farmers (a falsehood many of us once took as gospel), has never been proven to save significant energy, and has gotten more annoying now that we can all complain about it to each on social media.

The Illinois Senate passed a bill in November 2019 that would make daylight saving permanent (so no “falling back” in November). It’s yet to be approved by the House, much less the governor, and a counterargument has been made for a change to permanent standard time.

Which brings us back to where we started. Sunday morning, we’re gonna need extra coffee.
