There were four vehicular hijacking incidents recorded over an eight-day span in the Bronzeville, Hyde Park and Washington Park neighborhoods. Police believe the same suspects were involved in each incident.

The incidents occurred:

• In the 500 block of East 49th St. on Jan. 11, 2020 at 6 p.m.

• In the 900 block of East 49th St. on Jan. 17, 2020 at 2:30 p.m.

• In the 5600 block of South Michigan Ave. on Jan. 19, 2020 at 3:45 p.m.

• In the 5400 block of South Dorchester Ave. on Jan. 19, 2020 at 6:30 p.m.

All four of the carjackings followed a similar pattern: two to three male offenders would approach a lone woman who was sitting in or standing just outside of their vehicle. Those offenders would then threaten the victim – on two occasion they pointed a handgun at them – before entering the vehicle and driving away.

According to police, the offenders are all black males between the ages of 15 and 20.

City data shows there have been 26 carjackings through Jan. 12 – though that figure does not reflect any of the incidents that have occurred since that date. Last week, the police department warned residents about similar crimes that were carried out in the Washington Heights neighborhood also on the South Side.

On Wednesday, police announced charges against a 20-year-old Chicago man who allegedly carjacked two groups on the Near North Side earlier this month, including one with children.

Anyone with information on the Washington Park-area incidents is asked to contact Area Central Detectives at 312-747-8380.
