Congress may still be on its summer recess, but that hasn’t given politics a rest in Washington … or Chicago.
Currently, more than half of Democrats in the House of Representatives say they support an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump as the march to the 2020 election intensifies.
And in Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot is getting ready to give Chicago taxpayers a dose of castor oil on Thursday for her “State of the City” address about the city’s billion dollar deficit.
U.S. Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia has had a foot in both local and national politics for decades. Now representing Illinois’ 4th Congressional District, Garcia has become an outspoken critic of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
That includes the administration’s new “public charge” rule, which would deny green cards to many immigrants in the U.S. who rely on public aid. Earlier this month, Garcia said the rule stands “for division and racism.”
Trump administration policies have also left asylum seekers waiting in Mexico by the thousands.
“We’re simply asking that people who are claiming political asylum have the opportunity to make their case,” Garcia told Carol Marin on Monday on “Chicago Tonight.”
In May, Garcia voiced support for an impeachment inquiry against Trump, a position that as of last week is shared by a majority of his Democratic House colleagues.
“I think that (an impeachment inquiry) will give us an opportunity for more people to understand what is in the Mueller report, especially the pieces in there about obstruction of justice and other efforts at violating the law,” Garcia said Monday.
Before being elected to Congress last year, Garcia served as a Chicago alderman, Illinois state senator, and a Cook County commissioner. He also ran for mayor of Chicago in 2015, forcing Mayor Rahm Emanuel into the city’s first mayoral runoff election. Garcia supported Lightfoot in the April runoff against Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.
