Brittani Rice, 18, and Senobia Brantley, 19, were both shot and killed just after 11:30 p.m. Monday as they sat inside a vehicle on the 7700 block of South Eggleston Avenue. A 19-year-old male in the vehicle was also shot in the right shoulder, but survived and remains in stable condition.

Chicago Police Captain Gilberto Calderon said Tuesday the trio were approached by a group of three black males who opened fire before fleeing the scene in a blue sedan. But investigators thus far have not identified the suspects or any possible motive for the slayings.

“At this point we don’t know exactly the reason why they were here,” Calderon said during a press briefing Tuesday morning. “We really need some assistance because the detectives at this point are looking for leads.”

No one is in custody and police say it’s unclear how many of the three suspects actually opened fire on the victims. Rice and Brantley were each struck multiple times. They were taken to St. Bernard’s Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office on Tuesday afternoon confirmed the cause of death for both teens was multiple gunshot wounds.

All three victims were friends and worked together at the same store, Calderon said. All three lived nearby and, but police say it’s unclear why they stopped exactly where they did Monday night in the Winneconna Parkway neighborhood near the Auburn Park Lagoon.

Police say the neighborhood the victims were in is safe and they don’t believe the shooting was gang-related.

“At this point we’re trying to find out exactly what was the reason that they were targeted,” Calderon said. “Was it a domestic incident, was it something with work? We don’t know at this point. But let me just be clear with that, any shooting is violent, any incident like that is not acceptable here in the city of Chicago and we’re trying to do our best to try and curb that type of violence.”
