“Now how ridiculous, we’re the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years with all of those benefits. It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous and it has to end,” he said Monday during an interview for the new series “Axios on HBO.”

As for the effect of his statement on the upcoming election, Lisa Desjardins of the “PBS NewsHour” said it “stokes up the true believers of President Trump.”

“Whether the president actually goes through and attempts something like this is another question ... he’s signaling to his base – especially the anti-immigration base – that he is there for them and wants them to show up for him at the polls on Tuesday,” said Desjardins, a Capitol Hill correspondent.

What’s also getting national attention: two congressional races in Illinois.

“I wouldn’t be surprised that if Democrats have the night that they hope to have, Illinois is in position to be the state that gives Democrats control of the House,” Desjardins said, pointing to the congressional races in the 6th and 14th Districts.
