Those who enjoyed reading William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies in high school may want to check out Steppenwolf Theatre’s staging of the classic story this weekend. In a web extra review for our online audience this week, Chicago Sun-Times theater critic Hedy Weiss called the performance “a really great show." Directed by Halena Kays, the play transports audiences to a deserted island inhabited by a group of stranded British school boys. Although the show is part of the Steppenwolf for Young Adults series, it is also open to the public on the weekends. Lord of the Flies runs for 1 hour and 30 minutes, and will be performed through November 15. Tickets cost $20. For more information, click here.

This week, Chicago Tonight’s Artbeat blog featured  Once Upon a Dream, “the feel-good show of the season,” starring The Rascals. Produced and directed by Steven Van Zandt and Marc Brickman, the show marks the band’s first tour in 40 years. Van Zandt describes the show as “a combination of a Rock Concert and a Broadway show.” In addition to musical performances, the production also consists of storytelling, actors reenacting important moments in the band’s history, and archival footage. This weekend, Once Upon a Dream will be performed at Cadillac Palace on Friday November 8 at 7:30 pm, Saturday November 9 at 8:00 pm, and Sunday November 10 at 2:00 pm. A new exhibit called The Way of the Shovel: Art as Archaeology opens at the Museum of Contemporary Art on Saturday.
