From a Chicago alley that’s still paved with wood blocks, to a cowpath among the skyscrapers in the downtown Loop, and other secret byways. Geoffrey Baer explores Chicago’s oddest and most interesting streets and alleys for Hidden Chicago.

  • The “cowpath” is located at 100 W. Monroe. It’s behind black metal doors. Not open to the public.
  • The wood block alley runs east and west between State St. and Astor St. about 100 feet south of North Avenue (directly behind the Cardinal’s mansion.)
  • Wolf Road Prairie, Westchester, IL, is bordered on the south by 31st Street, on the north by 26th Street (also known as Constitution Road), and on the east by Wolf Road. There is also a ‘Prairie House’ accessible to visitors at 11225 Constitution Drive, Westchester. Click here for a virtual tour of the Prairie.
  • Our Lady of Lourdes is located at the corner of Leland and Ashland, Chicago.
